This is Akwaaba's Ashanti heartland tour: Kumasi's palace, its biggest market, and the village where kente cloth was born, all in one day. We start around 8:30am from your Kumasi hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with a local guide. First stop is Manhyia Palace Museum, the former residence of the Asantehene (the Ashanti king). Plan on 30 to 45 minutes inside, and a few rooms don't allow photos. From there we walk you through Kejetia Market, one of the largest markets in West Africa with thousands of stalls selling everything from cloth to spices to hardware. It's loud, it's crowded, and it's the real thing, so keep your bag close. Next we drive about 30 to 40 minutes out to Bonwire, the town where kente weaving started. Weavers here still work wooden looms by hand, and you'll watch a demonstration and can buy cloth directly from them (bring cedis: cash direct from the weaver is cheaper than anything in a Kumasi shop). Heading back into town we stop at the Okomfo Anokye Sword Site, where legend has it the priest who founded the Ashanti Kingdom drove a sword into the ground centuries ago. It's still standing. You're dropped back at your hotel by mid-to-late afternoon, around 4:30pm. One thing to know upfront: this tour runs from Kumasi, not Accra. Kumasi is 4 to 5 hours by road from Accra (about 45 minutes if you fly), so it's built for travelers already based in Kumasi or the Ashanti Region, or as a stop within a longer multi-city Ghana itinerary.
