Ghana has a mountain range. Almost nobody sells it. You can see the Volta highlands in a single day — we sell that trip too, and it means leaving Accra at 5am and getting home at 7pm having spent nine of those hours in a car. This is the other way to do it. You leave Friday afternoon, you sleep up there twice, and you climb in the cool instead of the heat. Saturday starts at six on Mount Afadja. At 885 metres it is the highest point in Ghana, sitting in the Agumatsa range right on the Togo border — about an hour up, an hour back down, steep the whole way. From the top the range runs out in front of you and Togo is on the other side. Then Tagbo Falls at Liati Wote, and an afternoon of nothing at all, several degrees cooler than the city you left. Sunday is Wli. Forty minutes on foot through the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary with eleven stream crossings on the way in, and then the tallest waterfall in West Africa in front of you, with a colony of fruit bats living on the cliff face beside it. You swim under it. On the road home you stop at Tafi Atome, a village that has protected its mona monkeys as sacred for generations — the sanctuary was formalised in 1996, the arrangement is much older. Hold out a banana and they come down to you. Back in Accra by seven on Sunday evening.
