Every Akwaaba booking includes travel protection through Sanlam | Allianz — covered from the moment you land in Ghana until you leave.
Come home. Give home. A portion of every booking goes to the Akwaaba Foundation — helping Ghanaian children stand in, and learn from, the history beneath their feet.
Ghana's wild elephants live in exactly one place, and it isn't anywhere near Accra. Mole National Park sits close to 600km north, in the dry savanna outside Tamale, which is why every real operator selling this trip sells it as an overnight, not a day tour – there's no way to fly up, safari, and fly back before dark. This is the fast, focused version of a Mole trip — two days, one overnight, elephants and Larabanga covered properly. If you have more time and want a longer, more immersive Northern Ghana stay with extra cultural stops, Akwaaba also runs a 5-day version, Soft Life Safari: Mole Luxury. This package covers the distance properly: a morning domestic flight to Tamale, a two-hour drive into the park, an afternoon 4x4 safari across its waterholes and grassland, one night inside the park, and a dawn walking safari on foot with an armed wildlife ranger before heading out past the centuries-old Larabanga Mosque and back to the airstrip. Elephants are the draw, but they're wild animals on their own schedule, not zoo residents on a timer. Sightings are strongest in dry season, roughly November through May, when the herds cluster at the park's waterholes and turn up reliably on both the jeep and walking safaris. Expect kob antelope, warthogs, baboons and troops of patas monkeys along the way, with buffalo a rarer bonus. The walking safari is the part most itineraries in Ghana simply don't offer: tracking elephants on foot, at close range, with a licensed ranger carrying a rifle for safety, rather than watching from behind a vehicle window. Larabanga is a short drive from the park gate and worth the stop on its own terms. The mosque there is one of the oldest surviving examples of Sudano-Sahelian mud-and-stick architecture in West Africa, a building style more associated with Mali and Burkina Faso than the Ghanaian coast. It's still a working mosque serving a small Muslim community, and the guide who meets you there can walk you through its 15th-century founding story before the drive back to Tamale for the return flight. Pack light and neutral: khaki or muted clothing works better than bright colors or dark blue, which can attract tsetse flies in the park. Bring comfortable closed-toe shoes for the walking safari, a hat and sunscreen for the midday heat, a light layer for the cool pre-dawn start, and insect repellent – Mole sits in a malaria zone, so antimalarial medication before travel is strongly recommended. A valid passport or Ghana Card is required for domestic flight check-in. As with any Northern Ghana itinerary built around a single daily domestic flight, exact flight times, lodge assignment, and ranger scheduling are subject to seasonal availability and are confirmed at the time of booking rather than guaranteed at purchase – this is standard for the Tamale-Mole route and applies to every operator running this trip, not just Akwaaba. Solo travelers price at $1,349. Traveling as a group of 2-5? Reach out before you book — group rates on this route depend on real-time flight and lodge availability out of Tamale, so we confirm your best price directly rather than posting one that can't flex with actual seat/room counts.
