Nzulezu Stilt Village & the Western Coast
Nzulezu sits on Lake Tadane in the Amansuri wetland, five kilometres from the nearest road and reachable only by dugout canoe. Around five hundred Nzema people live there - homes, a school, a church, a bar - all of it on stilts above the water. The hour-long paddle in, through narrow channels past kingfishers and the occasional crocodile, is half the reason to go. We pair it with the Western coast, because a seven-hour drive each way deserves more than one stop: Fort Sao Antonio at Axim, Fort Apollonia at Beyin, the beach at Busua, and Kwame Nkrumah's birthplace at Nkroful on the way home. Know before you book: in the dry months the water drops and there is about a kilometre on foot before you board the canoe. In the rainy season you paddle the whole way and see far more wildlife.
