The day every visitor to Ghana remembers — two UNESCO slave-trade castles and the Kakum canopy walkway, done properly in one long, honest day from Accra. We start before sunrise (yes, 5am — it beats both the Accra traffic and the coastal heat) and reach the Kakum canopy walkway while the rainforest is still cool: seven suspension bridges strung 40 metres up in the trees, one of only three canopy walks in Africa. Then the weight of the day. Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where a guide walks you through the dungeons cut into the rock and out through the Door of No Return. Fifteen minutes west, Elmina Castle — St. George's, built by the Portuguese in 1482, the oldest European building south of the Sahara. This is a full ~13-hour day and the canopy walk is a real climb; we tell you that up front. You come back quieter than you left. Round-trip transport, guide, all three entries and lunch are handled — you just show up.
