In Ghana the drum doesn’t just keep time — it talks, calls a village together, and remembers what words forget.

What is African drumming & dancing?

It’s the heartbeat of Ghanaian life — the sound of naming ceremonies, festivals, funerals and Friday nights. A lead drummer calls, the others answer, and the dancers reply with their feet. In this session you’ll learn to play the djembe and other hand drums, feel how call-and-response works, and pick up the traditional dance steps that go with the beat, all led by experienced local performers.

Where does it come from?

Ghana’s drumming traditions run through the Ga, Ewe and Akan peoples, each with their own drums, rhythms and dances. The talking drum could once send messages across valleys by mimicking the tones of speech. You’ll often find the craft alive at Accra’s Arts Centre and cultural venues, where this experience brings drummers and dancers straight to you.
