Kente Weaving in Accra
Sit at a traditional loom beside a master weaver, learn the craft that once dressed kings, and take home a strip you wove with your own hands.
Kente is one of the most recognisable cloths on earth — and behind every strip is a story told in colour, pattern and proverb.
What is kente cloth?
Kente (ken-teh) is a hand-woven silk-and-cotton cloth made of narrow strips sewn edge to edge into bold geometric patterns. It began with the Ashanti and Ewe peoples of Ghana and was once reserved for royalty — worn by kings and chiefs for the most important occasions. Every colour and pattern carries meaning, so a finished cloth is less a fabric than a message you can wear.

Kente colours & their meanings
Part of what makes kente special is its symbolism — each colour speaks:
Patterns have names and proverbs too — the famous Adweneasa (“my skill is exhausted”) pattern signals a weaver’s very highest mastery.
Where does kente come from?
The heart of kente is Bonwire, a village about 30 minutes from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, along with nearby Adanwomase — the weaving villages where the craft has passed down for generations, and where you’ll find the best prices to buy kente direct.
