Do You Need a Visa to Visit Ghana?

Most nationalities need a visa to enter Ghana. Citizens of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) member countries are the main exception.

ECOWAS Citizens — No Visa Required

Citizens of the following countries can enter Ghana without a visa:
Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo

All Other Nationalities — Visa Required

Everyone else — UK, USA, Canada, Australia, EU countries, India, China, South Africa — must have a visa before arrival.

Ghana does not currently offer a visa on arrival for most nationalities. Apply in advance.

Types of Ghana Visa

Tourist Visa

For leisure travel, visiting family and friends, cultural tourism, and events. A standard tourist visa is issued for up to 60 days (single entry); multiple-entry options are available on request, and you can apply for extensions while in-country.

Business Visa

For meetings, conferences, and trade visits — up to 60 days. You will need a letter of invitation from a Ghanaian company or organisation.

Transit Visa

For passengers connecting through Accra without entering Ghana. Valid 48–72 hours. Not required if you remain airside.

How to Apply for a Ghana Visa in 2026

Option 1: Ghana Online Visa Portal (Recommended)

The Ghana Immigration Service runs an online visa application system at gisonline.gov.gh. This is the fastest method and the one most people use.

Steps:

  1. Create an account at gisonline.gov.gh
  2. Select visa type — Tourist, Business, or other
  3. Fill in personal details — name, passport number, nationality, travel dates
  4. Upload documents:
  5. Passport data page (scan or photo — must be valid for at least 6 months from your travel date)
  6. Passport-size photograph (white background, recent)
  7. Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter from your host)
  8. Return flight booking or proof of onward travel
  9. Bank statement (3 months, showing sufficient funds)
  10. Yellow fever vaccination certificate (required for entry — see below)
  11. Pay the visa fee (credit/debit card accepted)
  12. Submit application
  13. Receive e-visa by email — print it and carry it with your passport

Processing time: Standard — 5–7 business days. Express — 2–3 business days at a higher fee.

Apply at least 2–3 weeks before travel to allow time for processing and any back-and-forth over documents.

Option 2: Ghana High Commission / Embassy

You can apply in person or by post at the Ghana High Commission or Embassy in your country.

UK:
Ghana High Commission London
13 Belgrave Square
London SW1X 8PN
www.ghc-uk.com

USA:
Embassy of Ghana Washington DC
3512 International Drive NW
Washington, DC 20008

Canada:
Ghana High Commission Ottawa
1 Clemow Avenue
Ottawa, ON K1S 2A9

In-person applications require the same documents as the online portal and typically take 5–10 business days.

  • [ ] Valid passport — valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date; at least 2 blank pages
  • [ ] Passport photo — recent, white background, clear face, no glasses
  • [ ] Completed application form (online or paper)

Yellow Fever Certificate — Mandatory

Ghana requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for all arriving passengers. This is not optional — without a valid yellow fever certificate (the yellow International Certificate of Vaccination, also called the “yellow card”), you can be refused entry or pulled aside for vaccination at the airport.

Visit a registered travel clinic at least 10 days before departure. Get vaccinated, get your yellow card, and keep it in your passport throughout the trip. Immigration will ask for it immediately on arrival.

In the UK: Travel clinics at pharmacies (Boots, Superdrug Travel Clinic, MASTA) offer yellow fever vaccination from approximately £60–£80.

In the USA: Check the CDC’s travel clinic locator. Cost approximately $150–$250.

Entry Requirements at Kotoka International Airport

When you land at Accra’s Kotoka International Airport (ACC), the process goes:

  1. Health screening — temperature check and yellow fever certificate inspection
  2. Immigration — present your passport and e-visa (bring a printed copy as well as the digital version)
  3. Biometrics — fingerprints are taken for all arriving visitors
  4. Baggage collection and customs

Customs allowances:
– Personal items and clothing in reasonable quantities: duty-free
– Electronics (laptop, camera): 1 of each duty-free
– Alcohol: up to 2 litres duty-free
– Tobacco: 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars duty-free
– Cash: amounts over $10,000 USD equivalent must be declared

Extending Your Ghana Visa

If you want to stay longer than your visa allows, apply for an extension at the Ghana Immigration Service headquarters in Accra before your current visa expires:

Ghana Immigration Service (GIS)
Liberation Road, Accra
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm

Extension fee: Approximately GHS 300–500 ($20–$35 USD)
Processing: 2–5 business days

Do not overstay without getting an extension. Overstaying carries a fine of GHS 500–1,000 per day and can result in deportation and a future entry ban. Neither is worth the risk.

Ghana Visa for Nigerian Citizens

Not required — ECOWAS free movement applies. A valid Nigerian passport or national ID is sufficient for entry.

Health Requirements Beyond Yellow Fever

Yellow fever vaccination is the only mandatory requirement for entry. The following are strongly recommended by travel medicine practitioners:

  • Malaria prophylaxis — Ghana has malaria. Talk to your GP at least 4–6 weeks before travel about antimalarial medication. Atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, and mefloquine are the most commonly prescribed options.
  • Hepatitis A — recommended for all travellers
  • Typhoid — recommended, especially if you plan to eat street food (and you should, it’s excellent)
  • Hepatitis B — recommended for longer stays
  • Rabies — if you’ll be in rural areas or working with animals
  • COVID-19 — no specific requirements for entry as of early 2026; check current guidance before travel

Travel Insurance for Ghana

Travel insurance is not legally required for entry but you should have it.

A solid Ghana travel insurance policy needs to cover:
– Medical evacuation (flights home in a medical emergency)
– Hospital treatment — Ghana’s private hospitals are good; public hospitals are variable
– Trip cancellation and delays
– Lost luggage and valuables

Get a policy with at least $100,000 medical evacuation cover. Check that yours covers “travel to West Africa” — some standard policies exclude it.

Tips for a Smooth Ghana Entry

  1. Apply early. Three weeks before travel is the minimum. Express processing helps, but missing or incorrect documents cause delays that no amount of express fees can fix.
  2. Print your e-visa. Digital is accepted, but a printed copy removes any risk from technology failures at immigration.
  3. Keep your yellow card accessible. Don’t put it in your checked bag. Have it in your carry-on, in your passport, somewhere you can reach immediately — officers will ask for it at health screening before you even get to immigration.
  4. Carry US dollars or GBP. Change money at the airport forex bureau (rates are reasonable) or at banks and licensed forex offices in the city. Do not change money with people on the street.
  5. Book airport pickup in advance. Kotoka has official taxi ranks, but arriving at a new airport and negotiating a fare when you’re tired is not the ideal start to a trip. A pre-booked private driver through Akwaaba App means someone waiting with your name, a fixed price, and no confusion.
