Ghana Packing List 2026
Everything you need for every type of Ghana trip — from a heritage pilgrimage to Cape Coast, to Detty December in Accra. No fluff, no forgetting.
Documents & Travel Essentials
Nothing stops a trip like missing paperwork. Pack these first and check them twice.
- Valid passport Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates
- Ghana visa Print a copy of your e-visa approval + have it on your phone. See our Ghana visa guide for 2026 requirements.
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate Required for entry. You need the physical yellow card — a photo is not sufficient at some ports of entry.
- Travel insurance documents Print your policy number and emergency contact. Akwaaba’s packages include SanlamAllianz travel insurance.
- Emergency contacts card Hotel address, local guide number, embassy number — on paper, not just your phone
- US dollars in cash Bring $300–$500 in small bills for the first day (airport exchange, taxi, tips). Withdraw cedis from ATM on arrival for better rates.
Important: Ghana requires biometric SIM registration — you’ll need your physical passport to buy a local SIM card at the airport. Have it accessible in your hand luggage.
Electronics & Adapters
Ghana uses Type G (3-pin UK style) plugs at 230V/50Hz. US devices run on 120V — you need both an adapter and a voltage converter for most American appliances.
- Type G power adapter The square 3-pin UK style plug. Most universal travel adapters include this.
- Voltage converter (if needed) US hair dryers, electric shavers, and some phone chargers that aren’t dual-voltage need a converter. Check your device label — if it says 100-240V, you only need an adapter.
- Portable power bank Essential. Load shedding (called “dumsor” locally) happens and venues can run out of charging points. A 20,000mAh bank keeps you going all day.
- Unlocked smartphone For your local MTN SIM card. Confirm your phone is carrier-unlocked before travel.
- Laptop or tablet (optional) If working remotely — Accra has reliable coworking spaces. Bring your charger.
- Headphones Long flight + airport waits. Noise-cancelling recommended for the 11-hour haul.
💡 Tip: Most modern phone chargers, MacBooks, and laptop bricks are dual-voltage (100-240V). Check the label — if it says 100-240V, you only need a plug adapter, not a converter. This covers 90% of what most travelers bring.
Clothing: What to Pack for Ghana
Ghana is hot and humid. Think light fabrics, layers for air-conditioned venues, and at least one modest outfit for heritage sites.
🌞 Daytime & Casual
- 3-4 light cotton or linen t-shirts/tops
- 2-3 breathable shorts or lightweight trousers
- 1 pair comfortable walking shoes (closed toe for markets and heritage sites)
- Sandals or flip-flops for the beach and hotel
- Sun hat or cap
- Light cardigan or long-sleeve (for heavily air-conditioned restaurants and malls)
🏛️ Heritage Sites
- 1-2 modest outfits covering shoulders and knees
- Long trousers or midi skirt for Cape Coast Castle — as a mark of respect
- Comfortable walking shoes (cobbled courtyards and uneven ground)
- Lightweight scarf (for covering up or shade)
🌙 Evenings & Dining
- 2-3 smart-casual outfits
- 1 elevated dinner outfit (Accra restaurants dress up more than you’d expect)
- Comfortable but polished shoes (you may walk more than you plan)
🌊 Beach Days
- Swimsuit(s)
- Cover-up or sarong
- Water shoes (Ghana’s beaches can have rocks)
- Extra towel (some guesthouses at Busua and Kokrobite don’t provide beach towels)
🎉 Detty December / AfroFuture Extras
- 3-4 dressy going-out outfits — the fashion at AfroFuture is serious. People dress significantly more than Caribbean events.
- African print pieces — kente, ankara, wax print. Buy locally if you want authentic pieces; there are tailors all over Accra who work fast.
- Comfortable but stylish shoes you can dance in for 4+ hours. Heels are common; make sure yours won’t destroy your feet.
- Crossbody bag or waist pack for events — easier than a clutch when it’s packed
- Mini portable fan (handheld) — venues get very warm during peak hours
Health & Medications
Ghana is malaria-endemic. This is not optional information — it requires active preparation before you travel.
- Antimalarial medication Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) or doxycycline are the most common options for Ghana. Consult your doctor or a travel medicine clinic at least 4-6 weeks before departure. Start Malarone 1-2 days before travel; doxycycline 2 days before.
- DEET insect repellent (30%+) Apply at dusk and dawn, and any time you’re outdoors near standing water. Essential for evenings outside.
- Prescription medications Bring more than you need — at least a 2-week buffer. Pharmacy availability varies and some brands aren’t available locally.
- Basic first aid kit Band-aids, antidiarrheal (Imodium), antihistamines, paracetamol/ibuprofen. Keep in your daypack.
- Oral rehydration salts Heat + different food = dehydration risk. Electrolyte sachets are cheap, light, and genuinely useful.
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ Ghana is close to the equator. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors. Available locally but can be expensive.
Travel insurance: Pack your insurance documents and have your provider’s emergency number saved. Akwaaba’s packages include SanlamAllianz travel coverage. If you’re booking independently, get comprehensive cover that includes medical evacuation.
Money & Banking
Accra is not a card-only city. You need a mix of cash and cards. Here’s how to do it right.
- USD cash ($200–$400 in mixed denominations) For airport exchange and initial expenses. Small bills ($10, $20) get better treatment at local exchanges than $100 notes.
- Debit or credit card (notify your bank first) Visa and Mastercard ATMs are widely available in Accra. Standard Bank, Absa, and Ecobank have reliable machines. Withdraw cedis on arrival for better rates than the airport exchange desk.
- Backup card Keep a second card in a separate bag. ATMs occasionally eat cards or fail — don’t be stranded.
- Small denomination cedis for daily spending Taxis, street food, and markets work on cash. Break large bills at supermarkets to keep small change available.
💡 Pro tip: The best exchange rates are at Forex bureaux in Osu and Adabraka — significantly better than banks or the airport. If you’re changing more than $200, find a bureau on your first full day. The difference adds up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Type G — the three square-pin UK style plug. Ghana runs on 230V/50Hz. Most modern electronics (phones, laptops) are dual-voltage (100-240V) and only need a plug adapter. Hair dryers and US-specific appliances rated only for 120V need a voltage converter too. Check the label on your device before packing.
Yes. Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into Ghana. You need the physical International Certificate of Vaccination (the yellow card) — not just a digital record. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel for full protection. You will be asked for it at Kotoka Airport immigration.
Strongly recommended. Ghana is malaria-endemic and the risk is real, particularly during the rainy seasons (April–July and September–November). Consult a travel medicine doctor or clinic at least 4-6 weeks before travel to get a prescription. Malarone and doxycycline are the most commonly prescribed options for Ghana. Also use DEET repellent in the evenings.
Yes. Accra has proper supermarkets — Shoprite, Palace Hypermarket, and West Hills Mall — where you can find most major toiletry brands. Bring enough for the first two days, then restock locally if needed. One thing worth bringing: your preferred sunscreen, as international brands can be expensive or unavailable. Shea butter products are everywhere locally and excellent.
Dress modestly as a mark of respect — cover shoulders and knees. Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes are important as the site has cobbled courtyards and uneven surfaces. Light fabrics work best given the heat. Most visitors find themselves moving slowly and stopping often — this is not a place to rush, and comfortable clothing lets you be fully present. Read our full Cape Coast Castle guide to prepare for the visit.
Detty December requires dedicated going-out outfits — more so than most events. The fashion at AfroFuture and the NYE parties in Accra is elevated: African print pieces, dressy separates, bold accessories. Pack 3-4 specific event outfits beyond your daytime wardrobe. Many travelers buy African print fabric in Accra and have it tailored in 24-48 hours — cheaper and more original than anything you’ll bring from home. Also bring a portable fan and comfortable dancing shoes.
