Our pick: Get MTN Ghana. The coverage difference matters when you leave Accra for Cape Coast, the north, or anywhere off the main highway. MTN’s rural network is consistently better than its competitors.

Where to Buy Your Ghana SIM

You have three options. We recommend the airport for most travelers — you want connectivity the moment you land.

Option 1: Kotoka International Airport (Recommended)

All three networks have booths in the Kotoka arrivals hall. Prices are marginally higher than the city (expect to pay a small premium), but the convenience is worth it — you can call your hotel, book your Uber, and WhatsApp your people to say you landed safely before you even leave the building. This is the right choice for most first-time visitors.

Option 2: MTN / Telecel Service Centers in Accra

If you have someone meeting you at the airport or you’re staying close to the city center, you can grab a SIM at any of the major service centers in Accra. Osu, Airport City, and the Central Business District all have branches. This is also the only place to activate an eSIM.

Option 3: Phone Shops and Supermarkets

SIMs are sold at pharmacies, phone repair shops, and supermarkets across Ghana. The SIM itself is often free or costs 5 GHS — but you’ll still need to register it on the spot with your passport, which takes about 10-15 minutes.

Registration Requirements

Ghana requires biometric SIM registration by law. You cannot use a SIM card without completing this — it’s standard and takes about 10-15 minutes.

  1. Bring your passport

The original, physical passport is required for foreign nationals. A photo on your phone will not be accepted.

  2. Biometric scan

Your photo is taken and fingerprints scanned at the point of sale. This is mandatory under Ghana’s National SIM Registration exercise.

  3. Buy a data bundle

The SIM itself is free or a few GHS. You’ll want to top up immediately — buy a bundle on the spot or via the MTN app.

  4. Test it before you leave

Make a call or open WhatsApp before walking away from the booth to confirm everything is working.

💡 Tip: If you’re traveling solo, registering a SIM at the airport is especially important — you need a working local number before getting into a taxi or rideshare. The airport MTN booth is fast and well-staffed.

Data Bundles: What to Buy

Don’t use roaming. Seriously. A single day of US carrier roaming can cost more than a full month of Ghanaian data.

MTN Ghana’s data bundles break down roughly as follows (prices in GHS, converted at approximate 2026 rates — check current rates on arrival):

BundleDataValidityApprox. USD Cost
Daily starter500MB24 hours~$0.40
Weekly standard5GB7 days~$3.00
Weekly heavy10GB7 days~$5.00
Monthly standard10GB30 days~$6.00
Monthly heavy25GB30 days~$10.00

What most travelers need: A 10GB weekly bundle or a 10GB monthly bundle covers almost everything — Uber/Bolt, Google Maps, WhatsApp calls, Instagram, and streaming music. If you’re at Detty December and posting a lot of video content, go for the 25GB monthly. Hotel and restaurant WiFi covers the rest.

How to Top Up

Dial *170# for MTN Mobile Money top-up, or use the MyMTN app. Scratch cards are sold at every kiosk and phone shop. You can also top up via the MTN website with a foreign card. Never run out of data — bundle top-ups take about 60 seconds.

eSIM for Ghana: What You Need to Know

If your phone supports eSIM, MTN Ghana’s eSIM option lets you keep your home number active while using a local Ghanaian number for data and calls.

This is particularly useful if you’re traveling for business or extended diaspora stays and need to be reachable on your regular number. The process:

  • Visit an MTN service center in person (not available at all airport booths — confirm on arrival)
  • Bring your passport and a compatible unlocked device
  • The eSIM QR code is generated and scanned on the spot
  • Activation takes 15-30 minutes
  • Cost is similar to a physical SIM

Compatible eSIM devices include iPhone XS and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and most recent Samsung Galaxy models. Check with your carrier that your device is eSIM-unlocked before travelling.

Note: Telecel (formerly Vodafone) and AirtelTigo do not currently offer eSIM support in Ghana. MTN is the only option for eSIM as of 2026.

Most travelers are comfortable with a 5-10GB weekly bundle, especially if your hotel has WiFi. If you’re attending Detty December or AfroFuture and posting content, go for a 25GB monthly bundle. MTN’s 10GB weekly bundle at around $5 USD covers standard travel use comfortably.

Yes. All standard apps — WhatsApp, Instagram, FaceTime, Google Maps, Uber/Bolt — work on Ghana’s 4G networks. WhatsApp calls over data are the most common way to stay in touch with people back home and cost almost nothing compared to international call rates.

MTN, without question. If you’re heading to Cape Coast, northern Ghana, the Volta Region, or anywhere beyond the main highways, MTN has the most reliable rural coverage. Telecel and AirtelTigo are primarily strong in Accra and the major cities.
