Ghana Sports Events 2026 — From Surfing to Football

Ghana punches above its weight in sport.

The country that produced Abedi Pele, Michael Essien, Asamoah Gyan, and a Black Stars team that came within a single handball of a World Cup semi-final in 2010 takes football very seriously indeed. But there’s more here than football — surfing, golf, boxing, cricket, and athletics all have active communities and real events worth attending.

This guide covers the major sports events happening in Ghana in 2026, so you can plan your trip around the action.

Football — Ghana Premier League 2025/26

Ghana’s top professional league runs from approximately October to May, with 18 clubs competing. The two most storied clubs are Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko — rivals since the 1930s and two of the most historically significant clubs in African football.

How to Watch

Accra Sports Stadium (capacity 40,000) hosts Hearts of Oak home matches. For derbies the atmosphere is genuinely something else — non-stop drumming, chanting, the kind of physical, passionate support that has largely left European football. You’ll feel it in your chest.

Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi (capacity 40,000) hosts Asante Kotoko home matches in front of what is, arguably, Ghana’s most fiercely loyal fanbase. Arriving in Kumasi for a Kotoko match day is an experience even if you have no strong allegiance.

The Super Clash

Hearts of Oak vs Asante Kotoko is the fixture every Ghana football fan points to. Known as the Super Clash — the most anticipated match in Ghanaian football. Dates are published on a rolling basis; check the Ghana Football Association (GFA) website or events.akwaaba.app for upcoming fixtures.

Tickets run GHS 20–100 (approximately $1.50–$7 USD). The season runs October 2025–May 2026.

Black Stars — Ghana National Football Team

Ghana’s national team competes in AFCON qualifiers and international friendlies throughout 2026. Home matches are played at Accra Sports Stadium.

AFCON 2025: The Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled for Morocco in 2025 — watch for Ghana’s qualifying campaign results and any 2026 preparatory friendlies that follow.

Check the Ghana Football Association schedule for confirmed national team fixtures in 2026.

CAF Champions League & CAF Confederation Cup

If Ghanaian clubs — Hearts of Oak or Kotoko — qualify for CAF continental competition, Accra Sports Stadium hosts the home legs. These are some of the most electric football matches in Africa. Home continental nights at Accra Sports Stadium have a different quality of atmosphere from even the biggest domestic games.

Check: CAF official site for the 2026 fixture schedule once confirmed.

Ghana Surfing Championship

September–October 2026 at Busua Beach, Western Region. Ghana’s national surfing competition runs on the consistent Atlantic swells at the country’s best surf break, with local and regional competitors across multiple divisions. The beach festival atmosphere around the competition days is worth the trip on its own.

Busua Beach is worth visiting regardless — a genuinely laid-back beach town with good food, cold beer, and surf lessons available for beginners. The championship adds energy and a crowd, but even outside competition the place has its own unhurried rhythm. It’s about 3.5 hours from Accra, near Takoradi.

Ghana Open Golf Championship

Date TBC for 2026. Ghana’s premier professional golf tournament regularly draws players from across West Africa. Venues include Achimota Golf Club and Royal Golf Club — both colonial-era clubs with some character. Spectator access is free in most public areas. Both clubs accept visitor green fees for a round (GHS 200–400) if you want to play rather than watch.

Boxing — Ghana’s Olympic Legacy

Ghana’s boxing tradition goes back generations. The country has produced multiple world champions — Azumah Nelson (WBC Super Featherweight and Lightweight champion through the 1980s and ’90s) is still considered one of the greatest African boxers ever to lace up.

The Bukom neighbourhood of Jamestown in Accra is the spiritual home of Ghanaian boxing. Local gyms here produced Nelson and several other champions, and the area is a fascinating cultural stop even if no fight is scheduled. Local fight nights do happen — ask around once you’re there, or check with Akwaaba App for upcoming amateur bouts.

Accra Marathon

Typically February–March 2026 (check the official site for the exact 2026 date). An annual road race through Accra’s streets with both elite and recreational categories. The course takes in central Accra and the coastal areas. Open to international runners — register through the official Accra Marathon website.

Beach Volleyball & Water Sports (Ada Foah)

Ada Foah’s resort area at the Volta Estuary hosts regular beach volleyball and water sports events through the year — jet ski racing, kayaking competitions, and kitesurfing. Check Aqua Safari Resort and Manet Paradise Resort for specific event dates.

Cricket — Ghana Cricket Association

A small but committed cricket community — a direct legacy of British colonial administration. The Ghana Cricket Association hosts domestic fixtures and occasional international matches. Check their social media for 2026 fixtures. Matches are played at various grounds in Accra.

Athletics — Track & Field

Ghana produces strong middle-distance and sprinting athletes. The Ghana Athletics Association hosts national championships and trials throughout the year at the Accra Sports Stadium athletics track.

Check: Ghana Athletics Association for the 2026 fixture schedule.
