Ghanaian Naming Ceremony
Receive a Ghanaian name and be welcomed home in a traditional outdooring ceremony — one of the most meaningful things a member of the diaspora can do in Ghana.
A name is how a people say: you belong to us now.
What is a Ghanaian naming ceremony?
The outdooring, or naming ceremony, is the Ghanaian rite that formally welcomes a person into the community and gives them a name rooted in the day they were born and the family that receives them. For the diaspora, it’s a homecoming made official — elders pour libation, share proverbs and blessings, and give you a name to carry. Many leave with a certificate and, more than that, a place.

A homecoming made official
For descendants of the enslaved, receiving a Ghanaian name is a powerful act of return — reversing a history that stripped names away. Ceremonies are held with traditional custodians across Greater Accra and beyond, often as part of Year of Return and Beyond the Return journeys. It pairs naturally with drumming & dance and a kente weaving class.
